Story chef Carl Thorne-Thomsen (L standing) addresses the crowd at the benefit dinner Friday with Cultivate Kansas City executive director and co-founder Katherine Kelly and Susan Thorne-Thomsen. New York Times food writer and author Mark Bittman is seated at far right.
Renowned food writer Mark Bittman came to dinner in Prairie Village Friday where he met up with renowned chef Carl Thorne-Thomsen.
Bittman wrote “The Minimalist” column for the New York Times Magazine for 13 years and now is an opinion columnist for the newspaper and lead food writer for the magazine. His newest book is “VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00.”
Bittman was the keynote speaker for Cultivate Kansas City’s Urban Grown Farms tour which ran through the weekend. As part of his swing through Kansas City, Friday he had dinner at Prairie Village’s Story restaurant, run by Carl and Susan Thorne-Thomsen. Carl has been honored this year by the James Beard Foundation and Food & Wine magazine, so it was a fitting final dinner stop for Bittman.
Story also has been a supporter of the urban agriculture movement in Kansas City and a purchaser of food from the urban farms. Carl Thorne-Thomson spoke briefly to the dinner of the importance of having fresh produce so close, as did Bittman.
The dinner was underwritten by the Menorah Legacy Foundation with proceeds going to Cultivate Kansas City. Susan Thorne-Thomsen said the multi-course dinner sold out immediately after it was announced.
Bittman was the subject of an interview in the Kansas City Star Magazine earlier this month.
